Everyone gets stuck in a style rut sometimes, whether it’s wearing the same pair of bootsall Winter or wearing the same black skinny jeans week after week. As we head into the first official week of Fall and dig out those cozy sweaters, one question comes to mind: what the heck do we wear them with?
The obvious answer would be jeans (black high-waisted skinnies if you’re like me). That, however, seems a little like the easy way out, and with so many inspirations from the Fall 2015 runways, we want to challenge ourselves to go beyond denim. While we still love our jeans to death — from flared to boyfriend cuts — it is time to step up our game. We came up with 12 different ways to embrace #sweaterweather, but our beloved jeans will sit this round out.
Layered Under a Vest
Take your sweater and skirt combo one step further by layering a vest. For a cohesive look, stick to one or two color palettes, and when in doubt, go for all black.
With a Matchy-Matchy Dress
Still not ready to let go of your dresses? Choose a knit sweater in a similar color and layer it over your dress for that Fall/Summer combo.
With Over-the-Knee Boots
While longer sweaters (i.e. sweater dresses) are a “do” for Fall, it leaves your legs exposed to the cooler morning temperatures. Pull on some over-the-knee boots, which will keep your lower half warm.
With a Fur Coat
Your sweater dress gets an instant upgrade with a fur coat. The two-toned option on this style influencer helps break up the otherwise all-black outfit.
Over a Denim Dress
Your Summer shirt dresses will get a much needed Fall overhaul with a simple sweater. Go with a cream-colored knit that hits at your waist for a casual but not frumpy effect.
With Textured Leggings
Textured or even leather leggings are a fun way to wean yourself off jeans. They’re usually made of a comfier, stretchy material and when worn with a sweater, well, that is as cozy as you can get.
With a Long Trench
When there is snow on the ground, chances are you won’t want to wear just a skirt and sweater. But ground-grazing trenches change the game and will keep you warm until you arrive at your destination.
With Like Colors
Work the monochromatic look with solid color pieces. The white sweater over a crisp oxford shirt paired with a hip-hugging skirt ties this whole outfit together.
With a Midi Skirt
No exposed body parts here. This outfit is a prime example of the art of layering.
With Pattered Shorts
Before it gets too chilly, play up a textured sweater with patterned shorts.
Add an Accessory
Although jewelry is the simplest solution to giving your sweater a wow factor, go another route and add a knit beanie for that extra special touch.
